The nights that go wrong in Pattaya are usually a bill, a drink you did not watch, or a ride home you did not price. Fights happen. They are not the common story. The rules below are the ones I would want in my pocket before Walking Street, and the visa line is here because people ask it in the same breath as ID.
The bill-by-bill version, with the late-night ATM notes, is the existing nightlife safety guide. Daytime traps, jet skis included, are scams to avoid. This page is the rules, the nightlife scams, and the entry stamp. The city map is the Pattaya nightlife guide.
The bill
Ask the price before you sit. If there is no menu, I leave.
Keep the drink slips in front of you. The usual trick is an extra round on the check. Pay what you ordered, and query the rest before the cash leaves your hand. ”++” on a menu means 10% service plus 7% VAT. VAT stays at 7% until 30 September 2027.
A bar fine is a fee paid to the venue so a dancer can end a shift early. It is not a payment for anything else. She can still say no. Prostitution is not legal in Thailand. Prices and the rest of that definition are on the bar fine page. If you did not ask for a bar fine, it should not be on the bill.
Seafood on Walking Street is sold by weight. Watch the scale and repeat the total before the fish is cooked.
People with animals or costumes may want money after a photo. Decide before you pose.
A tout offering a free show is not offering a free show. Walk away.
Do not photograph staff inside a go-go or beer bar unless they have clearly agreed. That argument is a common one, and it is avoidable.
Drinks, and the door
The drinking age is 20. Clubs check photo ID. Carry a passport or a driving licence. A photo on a phone is refused often enough that I would not rely on it.
Order your own drink. Do not leave it, and do not take one from a stranger. That is the whole drink rule.
Licensed entertainment venues may stay open until 4am (6am on New Year’s Eve). Bars without that licence stop selling alcohol at midnight. Jomtien Complex’s own site says its bars may run until 02:00. “The city is open” is not a legal fact.
On some Buddhist holy days, and on election days, alcohol sales are restricted. Makha Bucha and Visakha Bucha are the ones that catch visitors out. Check the date.
The stamp in your passport
From 15 September 2026, visa-exempt tourism entry for a published list of 60 countries and territories is 30 days. The Ministry of Interior notice was in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026. It replaced the 60-day exemption. The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s list includes the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the EU countries on that notice, plus others. It is not every passport. Seychelles and Mauritius are on a 15-day exemption. Some nationalities still use a bilateral deal or a visa on arrival. If your passport is not on the 30-day list, read the Pattaya visa guide before you fly. Do not assume this page covers you.
Land-border entries on the 30-day exemption are generally limited to two per calendar year. That limit does not apply to nationals of Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore.
The TDAC arrival card is free. A 30-day extension at Chon Buri Immigration, on Jomtien Soi 5, is ฿1,900. Soi 5 is that office. It is not a nightlife street. See the Jomtien nightlife guide if someone told you otherwise.
Overstaying because a night ran long is a bad trade. The permitted-stay date is on the stamp.
Getting home
The shared baht bus is ฿15 up to 10 km and ฿20 beyond, from 10 April 2026. Do not ask the price before you board a moving shared truck. An empty truck late at night may quote a private fare. That is a charter. Agree it, or wait for the next shared one, or open Grab or Bolt.
Pickup pins work on Beach Road and Second Road. They work badly in the middle of pedestrian Walking Street.
Agree a motorbike-taxi fare before you sit down.
Carry the hotel’s address in Thai, or a card from reception.
If something is already wrong
Tourist police: 1155. They patrol Walking Street and they have English.
Medical emergencies: 1669.
Walk away from an argument with security. In April 2026, Pattaya’s Tourist Police met venue operators about security-staff conduct after clips spread online. You will not win that argument on the pavement.
Do not buy or carry drugs. Thai penalties are severe. There is no useful grey area to explain.
ATMs on the street at 2am are a worse idea than an ATM inside a mall earlier in the evening. Foreign cards are charged about ฿220 per withdrawal at most Thai banks. The money guide has the rest.
What a normal night costs, so the bill has a scale
These are the ranges already used on the nightlife hub, checked October 2026, not a new survey:
| Item | About |
|---|---|
| Local beer at a beer bar | ฿80–120 |
| Local beer at a Walking Street open bar | ฿80–150 |
| Beer in a club or go-go | ฿150–250 |
| Cocktail at a club or rooftop | ฿250–400 |
| Club entry | Often free; about ฿200–500 on some event nights |
If the slip is double that and nobody mentioned ++, stop and read it.

FAQ
Is Pattaya nightlife safe?
For most visitors, yes. The busy streets are patrolled. The problems that actually recur are wrong bills, unattended drinks, and a ride home that was never priced. Tourist police are on 1155.
What are the common Pattaya nightlife scams?
An extra drink on the bill, seafood charged for more weight than you saw on the scale, a “free” show that is not free, and payment demanded after a photo with a prop. Jet-ski damage claims are a beach scam, covered in the scams guide.
What ID do I need to get into a club?
Photo ID, and you must be 20. A passport or driving licence is the document clubs accept. Do not count on a phone photo.
How long can I stay in Thailand in 2026?
From 15 September 2026, the visa exemption for tourism is 30 days for the 60 countries and territories on the Ministry of Interior list published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026. The old 60-day exemption ended that day. Other passports have other rules. A 30-day extension in Pattaya is ฿1,900.
What time do I have to stop drinking?
A licensed club may stay open until 4am. A bar without that licence may sell alcohol from 11:00 until midnight. Holy days and election days can close sales entirely.
The visa rule is from the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Ministry of Interior notice published on 31 August 2026, in force from 15 September 2026. Nightlife prices and hours match this site’s October 2026 nightlife guide. This page contains affiliate links; see the affiliate disclosure.
